When is Trondenes Church open for visits?
From June 23 to August 15, 2025, daily from 11 am to 14 pm. Outside this period, visits must be arranged. Please note that tours do not take place without prior booking.
On the historic Trondenes peninsula, just north of Harstad, Trondenes Church stands as a powerful testament to the Middle Ages. This impressive 1200th-century stone church is the world’s northernmost preserved medieval stone church – and with its thick walls, absence of a steeple and traces of fortifications, it perhaps resembles a fortress more than a traditional Gothic church.
Trondenes Church is a unique sight in Northern Norway and a natural stop for anyone interested in history, architecture and cultural heritage. Inside the church you will find, among other things, three magnificent altarpieces from the late Middle Ages, Gothic frescoes and a rich interior preserved through the centuries. The church is beautifully situated with a view of the Vågsfjorden, and the surrounding area offers several cultural and historical experiences, including the Trondenes Historical Center.
Trondenes Church is open to the public during the summer each year. During this period, admission is free, and you can experience the church on your own in peaceful surroundings.
Opening hours for summer visits in 2025:
