Join us for an evening walk along the coast to a peninsula shaped by history. A place where the past has left its traces in the landscape. Hear the stories from the Viking Age, let yourself be fascinated by a beautiful Gothic church from the Middle Ages and enjoy the striking view over the Vågsfjord. Welcome to the chieftainship of the famous Viking Asbjørn Selsbane. Welcome, to Trondenes.

The path along the lake

We walk from Harstad Sentrum in the direction of Trondenes along the sea. On the right we can enjoy the view over the wonderful Vågsfjord. The asphalt roads are replaced by a well-maintained hiking trail with wooden walkways as we approach Trondenes and leave the town behind us.

Trondenes Kirke

Surrounded by walls and the remains of watchtowers, Trondenes Kirke is reminiscent of a fortress. The world's northernmost medieval stone church was for a long time Christianity's outermost bastion on the border with pagan lands. It took two centuries before the last stone was laid. Come along and see where the Vikings for the first time renounced the old gods, and perhaps somewhat reluctantly, embraced Jesus Christ as their new savior.

Altevågen

For the chieftain Asbjørn Selsbane, Trondenes was a home, but also a basis for power. A strategic position along the fishing-rich coast of Norway, where it was easy to control nearby fjords.

Today, Altevågen is a popular area for enjoying the summer and grilling. But, 1000 years ago, this was where the chief summoned his warriors to battle. Stand on the pulpit where Asbjørn stood, before he was murdered by the king's men in the run-up to the Battle of Stiklestad.

Good to know: Toilets at Trondenes Kirke. The trip is approx. 4 km long. Good roads and paths, but you should have good shoes to walk in. You can stay longer at Trondenes if you wish, or choose to go back on your own if you don't want to take the bus.
